Canadian Geese have long been a problem for golf courses and parks .Now private residences are the geese's latest victims to be added to the list.
A small flock of even eight or so geese can make a field or yard unusable in as little as a couple of hours.
Canadian geese have been described as a digestive system disguised as a bird, spending most of the day eating grass and pooping upwards of two pounds of waste a day.
Needless to say this is a significant amount of waste and a significant problem. The simple solution would be to chase the birds from the area, but as migratory birds thats alot harder than it sounds.

Some birds have stopped migrating because they do not need to fly south to find food. They make our parks less attractive and appealing for recreation.
Border collies have proved to be highly successful at chasing the birds from the property, when the dogs are available. Additionally, the birds usually return as soon as the dog leaves.
Sprays have been sold to change the appearence and palatability of the grass itself to the birds. However, it is very expensive and needs to be reapplied frequently.
Fake owls, rubber coyote's and dog shilouttes have been put out in fields to resemble predators. The birds quickly realise the items do not move and are not a threat. Additionally ,since the birds have no natural predators in most parts of the country there is no reference of anything to be scared of.
Flags, pinwheels, motion activated sprinklers and propane cannons have been placed out in fields to "scare" the birds away. These tactics also while at times may initially be effective quickly loose thier appeal as they are as much of a nusance as the birds themselves. (Who wants a propane cannon going off every 20 minutes or automatic water sprinklers soaking the golfers on the back nine ?)
